About Us
The story behind pokedexchecklist.com and why we built the tool we always wanted.
Our Story
Hey there! I've always been a bit of a Pokémon fan, and in 2024, I decided to dive back into my childhood hobby of collecting Pokémon cards during my free time. It started as a fun way to unwind, picking up both vintage cards that brought back memories and some shiny new ones that caught my eye.
But then I decided that I wanted to complete the National Pokédex, something I tried (and failed) to do as a kid playing the video games, where I stopped around Gen 4. I was super excited to learn about all the new Pokémon I'd missed out on, and I figured collecting one card for each of the 1025 species would be my perfect challenge.
So, I went searching for a tool to help me track this goal, but all I could find were these living Pokédex trackers, which were either web apps or spreadsheets that were way more than I needed. They were packed with checklists for alt forms, regional forms, gender-specific versions, shiny variants, and all sorts of extra stuff I didn't care about. It felt so bloated, with features I'd never use, and it just overwhelmed me.
I wanted something simple: just one card per species, no matter the set, year, holo status, or language. That's when I stumbled across a nice spreadsheet someone shared on Reddit. I took it upon myself to clean it up, stripping out all the extra bloat to create a basic list of the 1025 Pokémon species. I've been using that as my guide, and I've made it to 58% completion so far!
But then it hit me: why not turn this into an app and share it with other collectors who might feel the same way I do? That's how pokedexchecklist.com was born. It's basically the exact tool I wished existed, built with the features I wanted: a straightforward checklist, search, and share options, all kept nice and simple.
I'm not done yet, though! As people start testing it out, I'm eager to listen to their feedback and add more features over time. My dream is to grow this into a go-to, no-fuss tool that every Pokémon card collector can use and love, making it as useful and personal as it's been for me.
